Common Error # 2

Caso: travel by + noun (medios de transporte)

  • Error. I travel wih train. Esto es incorrecto porque sabemos que la preposición es inadecuada. El problema recae en el sintagma verbal que hace que toda la frase pierda completamente el sentido. La combinación entre el verbo de movimiento viajar + el sustantivo tren esta seleccionada correctamente, sin embargo necesitamos una preposición apropiada.

  • Corrección. I travel by train.

What are Collocations?

Collocations are the combinations of words generally used together within the language. These can be either verbs or verb phrases combined with another term, just adjectives with a specific noun or even nouns put together. In today’s case of study we see a verb phrase combined with a noun. ESL students often forget to adapt themselves in the second language and keep on thinking in mother tongue. Here is one of those situations.

Case: Travel by + noun (means of transport)

  • Error I travel with train. This is incorrect for we know the preposition is inaccurate. The problem remains in the verb phrase which makes the whole sentence completely senseless. The combination of the movement verb travel + noun train is selected correctly nevertheless, we need an appropiate preposition.
  • Correction I travel by train. In this case, the sentence is correct according to the meaning. We can see the verb needs an accurate preposition in order to give the direction to the verb and therefore make it meaningful. In this case the preposition required is ‘by‘ followed by noun train.

So here is what ESL students sometimes get confused with when speaking English. Students get to speak a second language by thinking in their mother tongue and therefore mix concepts and ideas in English. In order to acquire collocations a in a more logical way I suggest students to put them into practise by using them within sentences and to look for them in context. Remember this whole explanation is for your vocabulary to boost naturally.
