Caso: Doble negativas.
- Error:
She says she’s not afraid of nobody. - Corrección: «She says she’s not afraid of anybody».
[EN] Regarding all the different types of mistakes a person can make when speaking English ( I’m included in this group since I’m not perfect!), we can sometimes hear people misusing some forms. Here we have one of the many examples:
Case: Double negatives.
- Error:
She says she’s not afraid of nobody.Double negatives are these misused forms when we think in our own mother language and yet not realize that in English double negatives are actually senseless. - Correction: She says she’s not afraid of anybody. In this example, we combine a negative action with a positive term ‘anybody’ so as to give the right meaning in English and of course to use the right form.
Such is the case of misused forms but do never forget that we are all here to learn from mistakes, that is the point of these posts. Try to see all this as a way to understand the culture through someone else’s eyes so as to see those things that seem so unnoticed.
