[ES] Los idioms pueden expresar cualquier mensaje de manera coloquial para que la gente de una cultura pueda entenderlo naturalmente. Los alumnos siempre traducen literalmente y siempre les digo que intenten no hacer eso y por el contrario busquen un equivalente en la lengua materna ( a no ser por supuesto que no exista uno). Esta es la mejor manera de realmente entender el significado de estas expresiones dentro de una cultura.
Love me, love my dog: Quien quiere a Beltrán, quiere a su can.
[EN] Idioms can express any message in a colloquial way so that people from a culture can understand it naturally. Students always look for a literal translation and as I always say, try not to do this but to look for the equivalent idiom in the mother tongue (unless of course there isn’t one). This is the best way to actually understand the meaning of these expressions within a culture.
Love me, love my dog: if you love someone, you must accept everything about that person.
This expression reffers to the complete acceptance of a person in all the possible ways. If you accept the person you assume the person has gotten achievements and made mistakes as well so you take the person even with the faults. In good and bad the acceptance is about understanding the fact that in some point there might be inaccuracy however always assuming the results from the very beginning.
Finally, the message we want to transmit in either English or mother tongue should not be affected by any change since it would be adapted in both cultures. By now students should understand the importance of respecting other cultures. This is why acceptance is always a must when learning new languages after all: love me, love my dog.
