[EN] What is an idiom?
An idiom is the cultural expression used in a language to refer to a certain meaning and sense within a situation. In other words, we can use idioms to talk about an action using other words related. An example of this is
bite someone’s tongue off: regret of having said something.
The expression refers to a person, who after having expressed an opinion or a thought, profoundly regrets of havig said it. It is used to show that it would have been better for the speaker not to express such a thing. Used in context we can say They should have bitten their tongues off when they said all that!
There are more idioms upcoming for those who have asked about them. Remember this is a useful tool to improve your vocabulary and skills.
FIGURE 1
FIGURE 2
[EN] Growing the Roots
I remember a Philosophy professor who once said that ‘philosophy was born the day someone questioned something´. A question that would be finally answered after analizing its own sense. And that is how the meaning of it all began, by making the right question we can get the right answer.
Questions
I always dwell upon saying that ESL students need to know this construction as they know their ID numbers. That is the way things can actually work, respecting the order is essential key when you want to succeed in communication. In the next figure we can see how the base question is formed.
Fig. No. 3
For both, information and yes/no questions the order is pretty much the same. We mandatory need an auxiliary, the subject, the verb and the object. In the first case, the speaker is requiring information of reason expressed by the wh question word, why so the right answer for this shoul be the reason introduced by preposition ‘because…´. In the second case, the question is introduced by the auxiliary which immediately indicates that the anwer will be either yes or no with no other option left. Aferwards, the speaker can expand the contents of the answer by adding more information.
Statements
When we speak, we give information about anything regarding to a topic. People can use exclamation to express anxiety or exitement about a situation, they can also make questions, or even just say an opinion about a news or a book. So communication is about giving the information we mean to say correctly. Statements are sentences that express an idea or concept said by someone. In figure 4 we can see how the different statements are constructed:
Figure 4
For either affirmative and negative statements, we need a subjetc introduced by a pronoun or a name(s) followed by a main verb giving the purpose or action. All this is complemented by the object which can be direct or indirect. For the negative case we mandatory need an auxiliary verb in the negative form in order to express the negation and it is located before the main verb.
To summ up, well asked questions obtain well answered responses and as a result, correct answers. We can say the answer is correct when what we mean to say is expressed in a way that the speakers can understand the same message. All in all, this is a brief explanation on how to construct essential questions and to make essential statements. Remember that this is just the beginning of many posts to come related to grammar content.
Los Verb Patterns son combinaciones de palabras introducidas por un verbo principal seguido de otro verbo en cualquiera de sus formas. Funcionan así sin una explicación lógica o existencial, y así los aceptamos. Hay diferentes tipos de combinaciones. Hoy vemos como muchos alumnos de esl cometen el mismo error confundiendo el verb pattern.
Caso: ENJOY + v. ING (terminado en ing)
ErrorI enjoy to play football.
Verb patterns are combinations of words introduced by a main verb followed by another verb in any form. They work just like that with no particular logical existential explanation, and we accept that. There are different types of these combinations. Today we see how many esl students make the same mistake by confusing a verb pattern.
Case: ENJOY + v. ING (form)
ErrorI enjoy to play football. This is wrong for we know there is a list of specific verbs that state the accurate way to say this. In the verbs Enjoy, like, love, adore, hate and dislike, among others, the correct pattern is one of these verbs to be followed by another verb in the -ing form.
CorrectionI enjoy playing football. This is the correct way to use this pattern. This specific combination gives the meaning of an activity or hobby for the whole sentence. The verb enjoy gives the positive connotation to the sentence (or negative if we use dislike) and verb playing gives the activity in this case football, the selected object.
I hope this explanation clarifies any doubt regarding why do we have to say it like that? questions. I chose this combination since students hesitate when seeing a verb followed by another verb in the -ing form, as it doesn’t make any sense for them. Remember that you can use verb patterns to support your vocabulary and different ideas in different contexts.
[EN] The Seeds of Knowledge
As I said some posts ago, I have been teaching English and studying it for so long now, that I can’t stop thinking of the main reasons why people have so much trouble with learning it or even understanding the language. So I got to this ‘crazy’ conclusion about students not having a good base. To start with anyt concept related to grammar, I am planting a seed for a strong root and as a result we’ll get a strong long-life tree. This series is developed in a B1 level required.
Structures
Structures are the base of everything in life: buildings organizations and of course, communication. English Grammar is not an exception. It is one of the easiest languages to learn in the world and this is due to its simple grammatical structures. I know people try to avoid structures or mathematic formulas, especially when dealing with words, letters and communication.
So let’s pay attention to what we need to know and focus on the main features required to succed from the beginning of the learning process. These are:
Vol. II: Grammatical structures.
Vol. III: Getting to know the phrases.
Vol. IV: The Verb.
We’ll take these main points into consideration for the following posts. Structures in the English language are a defining key to succed in your communicative skills, that is why I’ll focus on them for a start.
Do not panic! I know it sounds as if a 75-year-old teacher will visit you in your dreams and will scare you to death if you don’t study by heart. That will not happen! You will learn from the understanding process and threfore you will acquire the knowledge to strenghthen this amazing tree roots you we are now building (yup, building) . Everything is going to be detaily explained in Volumes II, III and IV coming soon this month. Yes, it does sound crazy, but you will see it for yourself.
[ES] En muchas ocasiones hay alumnos que me preguntan sobre el uso de los idioms y por qué los aprendemos. Bueno, simplemente es necesario si quieres mejorar y avanzar en tu actual etapa en el proceso de aprendizaje.
